Greg Abbott easily won a third term Tuesday night, defeating Democrat Beto O’Rourke in a midterm election that tested America’s supersized red state’s direction in the aftermath of the Uvalde school massacre and a strict new abortion ban. Abbott ran for a third term and faced internal party challengers, including former Texas Republican Party chair Allen West and Don Huffines. He won the primary with over 66% of the vote on March 1. Former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic nominee, challenged him. Abbott had a significant fundraising advantage over his opponents.
Abbott defeated O’Rourke in the election, making him the fifth Texas governor to serve three terms in a row, following Allan Shivers, Price Daniel, John Connally, and Rick Perry.

Doris Lechristia Jacks Abbott, his mother, was a housewife, and Calvin Rodger Abbott, his father, was a stockbroker and insurance agent.
