Edvin Rama was born on July 4, 1964, in Tirana, Albania, to Kristaq and Aneta Rama. He is the first of two children. His father, Kristaq Rama, was a well-known sculptor from Durrs who created numerous statues in Albania during Communism. His great-grandfather, also named Kristaq Rama, was an intellectual who fought for Albanian independence and schools. He was born in Berat and eventually moved to Durrs. Other ancestors on his paternal side hail from Dardh, a village near Korç in the southeast.

Aneta Rama (1938-2020), his mother, was a medical graduate from the southwestern village of Vuno, Vlor, and the sister of Spiro Koleka, a Politburo member during Communist Albania. Rama claims that the Koleka family, which dates back centuries, is of northern Mirditor descent, and that the surname Kol Leka was derived from it. His nationality is Albanian, and he is currently 57 years old.
