In August 2015, he took over as Colonel Sanders in the KFC chain of fast food restaurants from Darrell Hammond. By February 2016, Macdonald had been replaced in the role by Jim Gaffigan. Random House publisher Spiegel & Grau published Macdonald’s semi-fictional memoir Based on a True Story in September 2016. It debuted at number 15 for hardback nonfiction and number 6 for humour on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Macdonald began to shift his humour to a more reserved, deadpan style in May 2017.

Macdonald died from cancer on September 14, 2021, in Los Angeles, at the age of 61, after a nine-year battle. According to his brother Neil, he had been diagnosed with leukemia nine years previously. Upon hearing the news about Norm’s death, fans rushed to Twitter to offer their condolences. Along with his co-stars in Hollywood,Norm Macdonald Tributes: Lori Jo Hoekstra, a friend of Macdonald’s, also confirmed his death to Deadline. She further stated that Macdonald did not want the media to be aware of his illness since he wanted everyone to focus on his artistic accomplishments.

“He was most proud of his comedy,” she stated. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”
