Salima Mukansanga: Age 34, Rawanda

After being selected as the first female referee for the men’s African Cup of Nations at the beginning of this year, Rwandan Salima Mukansanga became the first woman to officiate World Cup games.

On July 25, 1980, Salima Mukansanga was born in Rawanda. She was chosen to preside over the Tokyo Olympic Games as well as the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The 34-year-old also holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and midwifery, according to the Rwanda New Times.
More recently, Mukansanga made history by becoming the first woman to referee at either the Africa Cup of Nations or any other major men’s football competition. Due to a lack of resources, Mukansanga struggled to succeed as a basketball player. She then turned her attention to football and never looked back.

She presided over a match in both the J1 League and the men’s AFC Champions League earlier this year, making history as the first female referee. She was chosen out of the 36 referees for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

She declined when asked whether there were any specific players whose matches she hoped to oversee, describing herself as “1% nervous and 99% enthusiastic.”

“I’m really conscious of the speed, I make split-second decisions. I have to continue training that muscle as the World Cup draws closer and be prepared to adjust to speedy developments,” she said, adding she has been practicing by watching videos of previous matches.

“I have been inspired by each and every referee, and they all have qualities I’d like to have.”

Stephanie Frappart: Age 38, France

Stephanie Frappart was officially appointed to whistle the opening match of the World Cup between the hosts Qatar and Ecuador. Frappart will be the first woman to be the central referee of a World Cup match in history.

On December 14, 1983, Stephanie Frappart was born. She was raised in Herblay-sur-Seine, and at age 13 she started officiating youth sports. When she was 18 years old, she was already officiating national u19 matches. In 2011, Frappart started officiating games in France’s third division of men’s football, the Championnat National. Frappart was the first female official in Ligue 2, the second division of French professional men’s football, in 2014. She officiated at the Canada-hosted FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.
