After completing her education and training, Furukawa was chosen by NASDA (National Space Development Agency of Japan) as one of three Japanese astronaut candidates for the International Space Station in February 1999.

He later started Astronaut Basic Training and was a certified astronaut in 2001. He has been taking part in ISS Advanced Training since April 2001, and he has also helped with the hardware design and operation of the Japanese ISS Experimental Module “Kibo.”

In May 2004, he accomplished Soyuz-TMA Flight Engineer-1 training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC), Star City, Russia.

After the training, he participated in NASA Astronaut Candidate Training, which was completed in February 2006. The training included briefings on science and technology, intense training on the systems of the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, physiological training, T-38 Talon flight training, and water and wilderness survival training.

After taking various training, Furukawa participated in the NEEMO 13 experiment, an exploration research expedition, as an aquanaut in August 2007.

Along with Jeremy Hansen, Michael Barratt, Jack Fisher, Aleksei Ovchinin, and Paolo Nespoli, Furukawa participated in the ESA CAVES training in Sardinia, which took place in 2013. They served as a cavenauts.
