On August 31st Mary Peltola, a Democratic former state lawmaker, won a special election to fill Alaska’s sole U.S. House of Representatives seat, becoming the first Alaska Native to represent the state in Congress, the Alaska Division of Elections announced on Wednesday. She defeated Republican former Governor Sarah Palin by 51.47% to 48.53%. Palin is widely known for her unsuccessful vice presidential run with John McCain in 2008.

In the initial June 11 primary for the 2022 Alaska at-large congressional district special election, Peltola was one of the final three of the initial 50 candidates. Only Democratic candidate Peltola made it to the runoff. Former governor Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III, both Republicans, are the only candidates left in the runoff after independent Al Gross withdrew. Tara Sweeney, a Republican who finished fifth in the primary and was denied the opportunity to progress to the runoff, was the target of a lost lawsuit brought by three Alaska voters. Sweeney then withdrew her candidacy once the case ended in defeat. Peltola will take office as Alaska’s U.S. representative on September 13, 2022, after defeating Palin and Begich in the ranked-choice runoff results.
