Madeleine was on holiday from the UK with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, her two-year-old twin siblings, and family friends and their children. At about 20:30, the McCann children were left asleep in the ground-floor flat as their parents dined with friends 55 meters (180 ft) away. After checking on the children all night, Kate discovered Madeleine was missing around 22:00.

Shortly after her disappearance, she was made a ward of court in England at her parents’ request, giving the court statutory powers to act on her behalf. Police described Madeleine as having blonde hair, blue-green eyes, a small brown spot on her left calf, and a distinct dark strip on the iris of her right eye. The McCanns released age-progressed images of her at age six in 2009, and Scotland Yard commissioned one of her at age nine in 2012.

The Portuguese authorities believed that Madeleine had died at the apartment and that her parents had covered it up in the following weeks, especially after misinterpreting a British DNA study. Portugal’s attorney general archived the case in July 2008, removing the McCanns’ arguido (suspect) status.
