Juan José Esparragoza Moreno, well known by the nickname El Azul (literally, “The Blue One”), was a Mexican drug lord and the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization that deals in drugs. He started out as a police officer with the Dirección Federal de Seguridad (DFS), then he and other Mexican drug lords established the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1970s. Juan José Esparragoza Moreno then oversaw the Juárez Cartel before settling into the Sinaloa Cartel after its fall apart in the late 1980s. He collaborated with Joaqun “El Chapo” Guzmán, formerly the most wanted drug kingpin in Mexico. El Azul net worth: The estimated net worth of El Azul is $5 billion. A familiar face from Mexico’s drug trade is Juan José Esparragoza Moreno, called “El Azul,” a former member of the Guadalajara Cartel and one of its leaders. Similar to Caro Quintero, Enrique Camarena is accused of plagiarism, kidnapping, and torture by “El Azul,” and they are offering a 5 million dollar prize for his capture. The newspaper from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Río Doce, reported that ‘El Azul’ would have died at the age of 65 after suffering a heart attack. The news could not be confirmed either by Mexican or United States authorities, who continue to search for “Azul” as one of the most important drug traffickers.

Rumors about his death

In June 2014, the news spread about the death of Esparragoza Moreno. The newspaper from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Río Doce , reported that ‘el Azul’ would have died at the age of 65 after suffering a heart attack. The news could not be confirmed by Mexican or United States authorities, who continue to search for “Azul” as one of the most important drug traffickers.

Just two months after the rumor, in August 2014, Mexican authorities arrested Culiacán who claimed to be the son of “Azul”. The detainee, José Juan Esparragoza Jiménez, said in his ministerial statement “that he was the son of the late (deceased) Juan José Esparragoza Moreno.”

Some sources reported at that time that there is no genetic information on ‘Azul’ that allows identifying the relationship and, since then, has refused to confirm the death of the Sinaloa Cartel boss who, after the recapture of Joaquín Guzmán on January 8, would remain at the head of the organization together with his compare Ismael ‘el Mayo’ Zambada.

On February 3, 1949, Juan José Esparragoza Moreno was born in Huixiopa, Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico. The nickname “El Azul,” which refers to “The Blue One,” was given to Esparragoza Moreno because of his skin. He is described as being “so dark that his skin seems blue.” He belongs to Mexican nationality.

The four children of “El Azul” indicated by the US authorities are Brenda Guadalupe, Cristian Iván, Juan Ignacio and Nadia Patricia Esparragoza Gastélum.
