Devale was undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft but was signed as a free agent after trying out for the team at the rookie mini-camp. On September 3, 2006, he was added to the Lions’ eight-man practice squad. Despite playing in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on September 9th, he was dismissed from the active roster on September 11th and re-signed with the practice squad shortly after. He was promoted to the active roster on October 15 and made his first start against the Buffalo Bills. On August 30, 2008, the Lions waived Ellis as part of their final cuts.

Ellis was signed to a futures contract by the Cleveland Browns on December 31, 2008, after sitting out the 2008 regular season. On July 26, 2009, he was released. In 2010, Ellis left the NFL and pursued a career as an actor.
