Police detained Humberto Jimenez, Jimenez’s brother, for drug possession in September 2012. Police searched Arnoldo’s residence and found his black Maserati in the garage. American Police came to the conclusion that Jimenez had killed Carrera in his automobile and dragged her body into the bathtub inside her apartment when blood was discovered inside the vehicle. According to the police, Humberto left Arnoldo in Mexico after driving him there.

Jimenez may still be hiding out in Durango, Mexico, specifically in the Santiago Papasquiaro neighborhood, according to the FBI. Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, is another possible hiding place for him.

On May 12, Carrera was supposed to pick up her kids from family members, but she never did. The police were subsequently notified by her relatives that she was gone. The afternoon of May 13 saw the discovery of her body inside her apartment. Police said they had found no evidence of a forced entry. Additionally, Jimenez had vanished, and his automobile was nowhere to be seen. On May 15, three days later, Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder and a state arrest warrant was issued. He was charged with fleeing the country illegally to escape trial on May 17.
