Samsonov began his NHL career by signing a three-year, entry-level deal with the Washington Capitals. On 4 May 2018, following his fourth season in the KHL with Metallurg. Following Braden Holtby’s upper-body injury, Samsonov called up from the AHL Hershey Bears as insurance. For the game against the Colorado Avalanche on November 16, 2018, he was the backup goalie to Pheonix Copley.
