Fabio Ochoa Vasquez was first caught in 1990 in Colombia as part of a government scheme that promised drug lords would not be sent back to the US. At that time, I was on the American list of the most wanted drug lords from Colombia.

It was in the United States that Ochoa was first charged with the murder of Barry Seal in 1986. Seal was an agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and his life was made famous by the 2017 movie “American Made,” which starred Tom Cruise.

Fabio Ochoa Vasquez was caught again and sent back to the United States in 2001 after he and more than 40 other people were officially charged in Miami with drug trafficking. Ochoa was the only one of them who decided to go to court, which is how he got his 30-year sentence. Most of the other suspects got much lighter prison terms because they worked with the government.
