Barnes met Matthew Madonna, a heroin dealer, and Italian-American mobster Joe Gallo of the Colombo criminal family when he was inside. As a result, he urged Barnes to assemble a team, and the two came to an agreement. Gallo gave Barnes access to a lawyer after his release from jail, and the lawyer was able to have Barnes’ conviction overturned on a technicality. After being freed, Barnes established his network of cocaine traffickers in Harlem.
