Barnes met Matthew Madonna, a heroin dealer, and Italian-American mobster Joe Gallo of the Colombo criminal family when he was inside. Gallo wanted to increase his footprint in the Harlem heroin market but lacked the staff to operate in the predominantly African-American portions of the neighborhood. As a result, he urged Barnes to assemble a team, and the two came to an agreement. Gallo gave Barnes access to a lawyer after his release from jail, and the lawyer was able to have Barnes’ conviction overturned on a technicality. After being freed, Barnes established his network of cocaine traffickers in Harlem.
