Dianxi Xiaoge’s mother had to wake up early in the morning to hike to the bottom of the mountain to bring back several buckets of springwater because their village did not yet have running water. Despite her mother’s skill in the kitchen, Dianxi Xiaoge was most excited to eat the laba congee, which they could only get from the county seat a few times a year. Because the mountains were steep and the land was thin, it was too difficult for her family to survive solely on farming. Her parents both worked on construction sites in different cities.

How did she get started with food vlogging on YouTube?

Dianxi Xiaoge spent her pre-university days at the sites with her parents and younger sister whenever she wasn’t in school. They’d run into each other at the construction site during a hastily eaten lunch. Her mother enjoyed cooking and insisted that village girls learn how to cook, so Dianxi Xiaoge and her sister began cooking at a young age. Her parents raised her and her sister in a traditional household to prepare them for housework when they have their own families.
Dianxi Xiaoge graduated from Sichuan Police College in 2012,   after which she sent her resume to provinces other than Yunnan since she had no interest in going home.

Although her major was to become a police officer, she did not work as a cop after graduation. Instead, she landed a marketing position at an Internet startup company, where she worked for four years and then moved on to other jobs. She planned to buy a house in Chongqing and move her parents in with her. However, she returned to her village after her father suffered a heart attack in 2016. Dianxi Xiaoge began selling local specialties online to make a living in Yunnan before capitalizing on the rise of short videos in 2016 by posting her own. She started her YouTube channel in 2018 and quickly went viral after posting a video in which she made hamburgers for her grandparents, who had never eaten them.
