Yasmin Mwanza played Fidda in The Lady of Heaven: Release date and blasphemy criticism

The Lady of Heaven is a 2021 British epic historical drama film directed by Eli King on his directorial debut and written by the spiritual leader of The Mahdi Servants Union, Twelver Shia Muslim cleric Yasser Al-Habib. The film, produced by Enlightened Kingdom, touts itself as the first film on the life of the historical figure Fatimah during and after the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s era. The film was released in UK theaters on June 3, 2022.

Since the film’s release on Friday, groups of Muslim protesters have been gathering outside cinemas across England, claiming The Lady of Heaven offends “the feelings and sentiments of a billion people around the world.” Cineworld has now pulled the film from all of its cinemas nationally, citing the protests, while Vue has pulled it from certain of its branches. This is a surprising, illiberal, and deeply concerning development.

The protesters claim to be outraged, above all, by the film’s depiction of Muhammad on screen (using computer-generated imagery rather than a single actor). According to them, this is ‘forbidden’ by Islamic law.
