In his first defense, he defeated by Marlon Starling. Breland won the vacant WBA Welterweight Title again in 1989. He successfully defended his championship three times before succumbing to Aaron Davis in a back-and-forth 9-round fight that was nearly called off twice due to Davis’ eye injury before Breland was caught and knocked out in round 9.
