A five-year contract agreement between the Saints and Payton was agreed on September 15, 2019. In 2019, the Saints again finished 13-3. However, the Minnesota Vikings upset them in the wild-card round of the playoffs in overtime 26-20, giving the Saints their third straight dismal postseason result.
According to reports from June 13, 2022, the Dolphins had offered Payton a five-year, $100 million contract, which would have made him the highest-paid head coach in NFL history and only the second head coach to sign a deal worth that much after Jon Gruden, who signed a ten-year, $100 million deal to return to the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
