The younger of his two siblings’ names are José María and Ramón. Illa obtained his Philosophy degree from the University of Barcelona, where he also attended Escola Pa School in Granollers. Additionally, he earned a master’s degree in business management and economics from IESE Business School, University of Navarra.

Salvador Illa Political Career

Illa commenced his political trajectory in 1987 with his election as a councillor to the La Roca del Vallès City Council. After affiliating himself with the Socialists’ Party of Catalonia (PSC) in 1995, he was elected mayor to succeed the deceased mayor. During his tenure as mayor, the retail center La Roca Village, which annually draws in close to four million visitors, was constructed.

Illa assumed the position of Minister of Health of Spain in 2020 and maintained that position until 2021. During the COVID-19 pandemic, which characterized his presidency, he oversaw the nation’s health response.

At the moment, Illa holds the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Catalonian Parliament, a role he commenced on May 21, 2021. He assumed the position of First Secretary of the Socialist Party of Catalonia on December 19, 2021.
