Child sex abuse conviction: what happened to Ron Brierley?

Following an anonymous tip-off, Brierley was arrested and detained in December 2019 at Sydney International Airport. A significant amount of child abuse material was found in his carry-on luggage, which led to his arrest. Brierley entered a plea guilty on April 1 to three counts of possessing child abuse materials. On the same day, Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand Prime Minister, declared that she had begun depriving Brierley of his knighthood. Within three days of the announcement, Brierley renounced his knighthood.

Brierley was given a 14-month prison term with a 7-month non-parole period on October 14, 2021. On February 1st, 2022, the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal permitted Brierley’s legal team to contest the sentence. When the court was informed that his health was failing, Brierley was given a new term of 10 months in prison with a 4-month no-parole period. On February 13, 2022, Brierley was subsequently let go from custody.

Due to his Australian citizenship, Brierley is unlikely to be transferred back to New Zealand once his term is complete. If he hadn’t been, the government would still have been able to deport him back to New Zealand forcibly in the upcoming months. Because of recently proposed reforms by the current Morrison that reduced the visa cancellation requirement from 24 to 12 months of imprisonment.
