Tyrone Thompson, the young woman’s ex-partner, was arrested and charged with carrying out the horrific attack
At around 10.40 p.m. on Friday, Tyrone Thompson, 22, reportedly assaulted Mackenzie Anderson, 21, at her Mayfield home. Police were called to the unit after claims of an armed person. Ms Anderson was found outside with substantial injuries from multiple stab wounds when authorities arrived. Paramedics attended to her, but she died on the spot.
Thompson was arrested around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday and transferred to the hospital, where he was treated for a hand injury that was thought to be related to the incident. He was charged with murder, aggravated entry into a house with intent, and violating an apprehended domestic violence order. Thompson is accused of violating an apprehended domestic violence order on March 24, the day before Ms Anderson was slain, in Berkeley Vale, California.
Thompson was released from the hospital on Monday and taken to Newcastle Local Court for a procedural hearing. He was wearing a short-sleeved green t-shirt and extensive bandages covering his right hand and much of his forearm as he sat in the dock, represented by a Legal Aid barrister. The case was continued for eight weeks by Magistrate Janine Lacy to allow a brief of evidence to be drafted and served. Thompson did not request bail, which was legally denied.

According to NSW Police, the event was a case of alleged domestic violence. Mr Thompson had previously been in a relationship with Ms Anderson, according to authorities, and had recently been freed on parole.
Police were alerted to a horrific scene on Friday night, according to Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey.
“I just spent the last 20 minutes or so watching body-worn footage, and it was a horrific scene, horrific,” he stated.
