Giedroyc was born in Epsom, Surrey, on June 5, 1968, and grew up in Leatherhead. Michal, an aircraft designer, civil engineer, and family historian of Polish-Lithuanian origin from the Giedroy family, immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1947 and died in December 2017. Her mother Rosemary “Rosy” Cumpston (born 1937) is of English descent. Mel Giedroyc attended the exclusive Oxford High School before going on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a lower second degree in French and Italian.
