Matiss Kivlenieks, a 24-year-old goaltender for the Columbus Blue Jackets, was killed in a Fourth of July fireworks mortar explosion Sunday night, according to authorities.

According to Novi Police Lt. Jason Meier, Kivlenieks and several others were in a hot tub in Novi, Mich., when a fireworks mortar went off. The cause of death was confirmed to be chest trauma by an autopsy done Monday by the Oakland County medical examiner, and Kivlenieks did not die as a result of injuring his head in a fall, as officials initially assumed.

“It was unclear whether the mortar struck him directly or [the trauma occurred] as a result of the percussive explosion near him,” Meier said.
