Kwarteng worked as a financial services analyst before entering politics after receiving his Ph.D. in economic history from the University of Cambridge in 2000. His full name is Akwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng, and he is the only child of Ghanaian parents who arrived as students in the 1960s. He was born and raised in Waltham Forest, East London, and his ethnicity is African. However, he holds the nationality of the UK.
