Kwame Kilpatrick was born in the United States to Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and Bernard Kilpatrick. Kwame Kilpatrick was raised with his half-sister Diarra and sister Ayanna.

His parents divorced in 1981. Carylon, his mother, is a politician who served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1996 to 2010. Bernard Kilpatrick, Kilpatrick’s father, was a semi-pro basketball player and politician. He was elected to the Wayne County Commission and served as the director of the Wayne County Health and Human Services Department from 1989 to 2002, as well as the former Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara’s chief of staff. Later, he founded Maestro Associates, a Detroit consulting company.
