According to authorities, Jahn was killed while bicycling in Campton Hills, roughly 60 miles west of Chicago. He allegedly failed to stop at an intersection and was struck by two vehicles traveling in opposing directions, according to the police, though specifics of the incident are still unknown.

One of the drivers walked away from the incident unharmed, while the other received treatment for an unidentified non-life-threatening wound. The police did not identify the two other parties to the event.

His mother, Karolina Wirth, was a housewife. Jahn grew up watching the city’s reconstruction, which Allied bombing campaigns had primarily destroyed.

He studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich from 1960 to 1965  and worked with Peter C. von Seidlein for a year after graduation.  In 1966, he went to Chicago to study architecture under Myron Goldsmith and Fazlur Khan at the Illinois Institute of Technology on a Rotary Scholarship, earning a Master’s degree in 1967. He holds both American and German nationality.
