Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt won the Republican primary for U.S. Senate with surprising ease on Tuesday, putting an end to months of concern among GOP leaders that scandal-plagued former Gov. Eric Greitens would win the primary and risk what should be a safely red seat in November.

Greitens is the author of three books and a former Navy SEAL who fought in Afghanistan and in Iraq. He has been a White House fellow. He is also the founder of a nonprofit group, The Mission Continues, which connects veterans with volunteer work to help them in their post-military transitions. 

His Naval Career and Political Struggles

Greitens enlisted at the United States Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in January 2001, and graduated as an ensign in the United States Navy Reserve in May of that year. At February 2002, he graduated with Class 237 from Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEAL (BUD/S) training in Coronado, California. Greitens advanced through the ranks of the United States Navy Reserve to the rank of lieutenant commander.

Greitens was a Democrat until 2015, when he proclaimed his conversion to Republican. In 2016, he ran for governor of Missouri as a Republican. Greitens won the Republican primary over three opponents before defeating Democratic Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster in the general election. He was the state of Missouri’s first Jewish governor. Greitens’ signature achievement as governor enacting Missouri’s right-to-work legislation, which was ultimately repealed by statewide referendum.

Greitens charged with felony invasion of privacy and campaign-related charges in February 2018. In April 2018, he was charged with felony computer tampering; the charges were withdrawn in May 2018. Greitens resigned from office on June 1, 2018, following the start of a special session of the Missouri General Assembly to consider impeachment. Greitens later ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring incumbent Roy Blunt in the 2022 election, but lost the Republican primary to Missouri Attorney General Eric S. Schmitt.

Greitens received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President George W. Bush in 2008 for his efforts at The Mission Continues. Outside magazine honored Greitens Reader of the Year in 2010. Greitens was born on November 23, 1982 and raised in Spokane, Washington. Her father is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of sleep disorders and her mother is an oncologist. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University, a Master of Philosophy degree as a Marshall Scholar from St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a PhD from Harvard University.

After a four-year marriage that had been going well, Greitens started an extramarital affair with his hairstylist in 2015. She charged him of forcing her to have oral sex, of undressing, kissing, and touching her without her permission, and of threatening to share a naked photo of her if she told anybody about their encounter.

Greitens has stated that a report issued in 2018 by the Missouri House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight, concluded that the woman’s allegations were believable, discredited. Greitens’ ex-wife stated in a sworn document that he admitted to snapping the photographs.

Eric and Sheena Greitens announced the end of their marriage on April 11, 2020. Sheena Greitens accused him of physical violence “such as cuffing our then-3-year-old son across the face at the dinner table” in court records for their 2022 child custody dispute, and added that as a result of the abuse, “measures were made to limit his access to guns.” According to Greitens’ attorney, the alleged injuries caused by their son just “roughhousing with his sibling.”

Greitens rejected the claims of abuse, stating they were politically motivated and that top Republicans assisted his ex-wife in writing the affidavit.
