Christina Birch, a former US national track and field champion, has retired from professional cycling and is now pursuing a career as an astronaut with NASA. Christina Birch was born in Mesa, Arizona, on November 17, 1986, but she considers Gilbert, Arizona, to be her home. William and Joanne Birch of Gilbert and Moore, Montana, are her parents. Cycling, whitewater rafting, camping, and spending time on her family’s cattle ranch in Montana are among her favorite activities.
In 2004, she graduated from Gilbert High School. In 2008, she graduate from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biophysics, as well as a minor in Spanish. She studied abroad in Argentina as an undergraduate. In 2015, she received her doctorate in biological engineering from MIT.
Birch was chosen as a NASA astronaut candidate in December 2021 and will report for duty in January 2022 after completing two years of basic astronaut training. She taught Bioengineering at the University of California, Riverside, between 2015 and 2016, before transferring to Caltech in 2016 to teach scientific writing and communication.

“When I arrive at a race, I am relaxed, excited, and always looking forward to it since I know I’ve already put in all the hard work and training to the best of my ability,” she explain. All I have to do now is execute the racing strategy to the best of my ability.” She examines each scenario calmly and rationalizes the various options she has on the table during the strain of a race. “This is my new reality; now what am I going to do about it?” she asks herself, adopting a survivalist mentality.

A tough fitness routine is the foundation of her success. “I train with my colleagues at the Olympic Training Center velodrome in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the weeks leading up to a competition.” We’ll train extremely hard for two weeks before traveling and tapering for the World Cup.” Birch routinely undertakes “double-doubles,” or two training sessions on the velodrome on consecutive days. Her routine has change as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. Her workout now focuses on building a strong foundation. “I’ve been doing some large weeks,” Birch explained, “that involve some track work for intensity, gym (two times a week), road bike intervals, and a really long endurance ride.”
How many awards has she received over her career?
In 2016 and 2017, the 35-year-old won the national solo pursuit title, and she has represented the United States in World Championships and the Pan-American Games, winning two gold medals.
She left Caltech to compete for the United States National Team as a track cyclist and qualify for the Olympics at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Birch won three World Cup medals with her teammates in the team pursuit and Madison races, and she competed in the World Championships thrice. She back up her colleagues until the Tokyo Olympics’ final race selection in 2020.
