Grace Cavert is Bill Nelson wife. They’ve been married for almost 45 years. Cavert earned a degree from the University of Georgia, but he is originally from Jacksonville, Florida. She previously served as the Senate Spouses group’s President. The organization was created in 1917 as a way to help during World War I. Nelson received 51 percent of the vote in 2000 to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Senator Connie Mack III. Nelson was appointed to NASA’s advisory committee in May 2019.

He was widely regarded as a centrist and moderate Democrat in the United States Senate. Nelson favored same-sex marriage, lower taxes for low- and middle-income families, more environmental programs and regulation, protection of the Affordable Care Act, and Medicaid expansion. From 2013 to 2015, Nelson chaired the Senate Aging Committee, and from 2015 to 2019, he was a ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee.
