Shaw sought advice from Walter Cronkite, a legendary TV newsman, on how to pursue his passion for journalism and where to begin during his four years in the Marine Corps in Hawaii.

In Chicago, Shaw started out as a radio reporter. He had the chance to speak with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King assured him that he would succeed one day and advised him to carry out good deeds. Shaw left ABC to join Cable News Network, run by Ted Turner. CNN was the first television news network in the world to run 24×7. His former colleagues felt this was a crazy move; however, Shaw thought it was the last frontier in network television news. Shaw was included in the Hall of Fame for Broadcasting & Cable in 1999. He also received several awards and accolades for his excellent journalism.
