Laxalt, the son of Republican U.S. Senator from New Mexico Pete Domenici and Michelle Laxalt, was born on August 31, 1978, in Reno, Nevada. Laxalt was reared solely by his mother. Before 2013, Laxalt’s parents did not formally accept their son’s paternity.

Laxalt enrolled at Tulane University after completing his education at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia, a college-preparatory institution.
