Sauli Niinistö is a Finnish politician who has been the country’s president since 2012, the 12th person to hold the position. Niinistö, a lawyer by training, served as Chairman of the National Coalition Party (NCP) from 1994 to 2001, as Minister of Justice from 1995 to 1996, Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2003, Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 2001, and as the NCP presidential candidate in 2006. From 2007 to 2011, he was the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, and since 2002, he has been the honorary president of the European People’s Party (EPP). The decision is expect to be approve by the Finnish Parliament in the next few days, but it is only a formality.
