Usyk was born on January 17, 1987, to parents who were originally from the north of Ukraine in Simferopol, Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. While his father was a native of Sumy, his mother was born in the Chernihiv district. His mother, who also moved to Simferopol to attend school, worked in construction. They first met in Crimea while his father was working as a security guard there after passing via Afghanistan. He has two siblings and is the first child in his family.
He trained at the SC Tavriya Simferopol specialized sports school of Olympic reserve and played association football till the age of fifteen. Usyk transitioned to boxing in 2002. He holds a degree in physical culture from the Lviv State University.
