Hinds was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on February 9, 1953. He was the only son of his medical father and schoolteacher and amateur actress mother, Moya, and was raised as a Catholic in north Belfast.

In his youth, he was an Irish dancer and attended Holy Family Primary School and St Malachy’s College. He attended the College of Business Studies after leaving St Malachy’s before enrolling as a law student at Queen’s University Belfast. However, he was soon encouraged to pursue acting and abandoned his studies at Queen’s to register at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1975.

Hinds began his professional acting career in a rendition of Cinderella at the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre (1976). During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he was a regular performer at the Citizens’ Theatre. Hinds also played in Ireland with the Abbey Theatre, the Field Day Theatre Company, the Druid Theatre, the Lyric Players’ Theatre, and the Project Arts Centre during this time period. Peter Brook cast him in The Mahabharata, a six-hour stage play that toured the world in 1987, and he also appeared in the 1989 film adaptation. Due to complications renewing his Irish passport, Hinds almost missed the casting call in Paris.   He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the early 1990s.

Hinds starred in two major television docudramas: Granada Television’s Who Bombed Birmingham? (1990), in which he played Richard McIlkenny, a Belfast man wrongfully imprisoned for an IRA explosion, and HBO’s Hostages (1993), in which he played Irish writer and former prisoner Brian Keenan. Above Suspicion, a TV adaptation of Lynda La Plante’s detective thriller that aired in the United Kingdom in January 2009, starring Hinds with Kelly Reilly.

Hinds gained critical acclaim and won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Kenneth Branagh’s 2021 film Belfast. Hinds was cast in the comedy-drama series The Dry, developed by Element Pictures for Britbox, in August 2021. He was cast in the thriller film In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, directed by Robert Lorenz and starring Liam Neeson, in October 2021.
