The attack on Moise’s private house occurred overnight, and both he and his wife Martine Mose were hospitalized as a result, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph revealed in a statement. During an interview with a Port-au-Prince radio station Wednesday morning, Joseph described the attackers as “foreigners,” adding that some gang members spoke in Spanish.

Martine Moise, Jovenel Moise wife, was also injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, according to him.

Moise and Martine were survived by two sons, Joverlein and Jovenel Jr., as well as a daughter, Jomarlie. Martine and Jovenel Moise made it a point to keep their children out of the spotlight. Except for one report in 2019, there is little information on them on the Internet. According to reports, two of the president’s children fled to the Dominican Republic in the aftermath of the Haitian protests. Joverlein, who was 27 at the time, had entered the Dominican Republic through Jimani, accompanied by bodyguards and under the protection of Dominican soldiers. His sister Jomarlie had arrived in the Dominican Republic a few days before and was being transported to an unspecified destination from El Higüero Airport. The whereabouts of Jovenel Jr couldn’t be determined.

Jovenel Jr. and Joverlein have remained active on social media, with their Instagram and Facebook accounts becoming public over time. Their account activity indicates that the majority of their time is spent outside of Haiti. Joverlein has even formed a family, is the father of two children and may have immigrated to Canada. Jomarlie, the deceased couple’s only child, has kept her Instagram account secret under the alias @loristonk.

Haiti President Jovenel Moïse killed in attack at home

Moise was slain on July 7, 2021, when unidentified shooters assaulted his home in Pèlerin 5, a neighborhood of Pétion-Ville. Martine Mose, Haiti’s First Lady, was hospitalized as a result of injuries sustained during the incident. Later that day, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph’s office issued a press release blaming the attack on “a group of unidentified individuals, some of whom talked in Spanish.”

The incident, which occurred at 1 a.m., was characterized as “well-coordinated” by a “highly trained and heavily equipped squad” whose members spoke in English and Spanish. Martine, Mose’s wife, was hurt and sent to a hospital for treatment, according to Joseph. One of the president’s children, who was at home at the time of the incident, was taken to a secure place.

According to Joseph, the national police force is now in control of the situation and has taken steps to safeguard the continuity of government as well as the security of the nation. Joseph requested the world community to conduct an investigation into the murder.

“We also call on the international community to launch an investigation into the assassination and for the United Nations to hold a Security Council meeting on Haiti as soon as possible,” he said in a statement emailed to VOA.

Joseph vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

Who will be the next president of Haiti?

Mr. Joseph described the president’s assassination as a “heinous, horrible, and barbaric act,” adding that the perpetrators were “foreigners who spoke English and Spanish.” Creole and French are the official languages of Haiti. According to some reports, guys clothed in the dark and carrying high-powered guns pretended to be part of a US narcotics enforcement operation, but no official information has been provided.

The declaration of a state of emergency, sometimes known as a “state of siege,” allows for the prohibition of public meetings and the employment of the military as police, among other executive power extensions.
Mr. Joseph stated that “all precautions have been made to assure continuity” and that “democracy and the republic will win.”

However, doubts remain about how much control Mr. Joseph can hold.
In the event of a presidential vacancy, Haiti’s constitution states that ministers, led by the prime minister, take power until elections can be called.
But it is also unknown, as Mr. Moise named a new prime minister, Ariel Henry, just this week but has yet to be sworn in.

On Wednesday morning, the streets of the capital appeared to be mostly vacant.

The Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti, has ordered the “immediate closing” of its border.

Why Haiti President Jovenel Moïse was known as Banana President?

Moise was known as Haiti’s ‘Banana President.’ After his considerable involvement in the banana plantation industry, people began to refer to him by his nickname. According to a 2016 study, Moise’s company Agritrans stole the land and destroyed the crops of over 800 farmers in 2013, leaving them bankrupt. The site was then home to a private banana plantation. The bulldozers employed to invade the area ultimately tore down the homes of at least 17 families, who were homeless for many years.
