After serving as an analyst for ESPN, Crean was hired at Georgia. He has previously held the positions of head coach at Indiana and Marquette. In his final six seasons at Indiana, he led the Hoosiers to four NCAA tournament appearances and led Marquette to the Final Four in 2003. After leading Indiana to their second outright Big Ten regular-season championship in four years, Crean was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches and media in 2016. Indiana fired Crean on March 16, 2017.

His professional career and struggle

Crean worked at Michigan State twice, the first as a graduate assistant under then-head coach Jud Heathcote during the 1989-1990 season, at the request of assistant coach Tom Izzo, whom Crean had met on the summer camp circuit. Crean worked as an associate head coach at Western Kentucky under Ralph Willard from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, when Willard departed Western Kentucky to become the head coach at Pittsburgh, Crean was considered to be his successor.

Marquette University

Crean was named head coach of Marquette University on March 30, 1999. Crean’s teams earned five NCAA Tournament berths in his nine years at Marquette, one more than the previous four Marquette coaches had in the 16 years previously to his arrival. During his time there, Crean recruited, developed, and coached a number of talented players, including Dwyane Wade, Dominic James, Steve Novak, Wesley Matthews, and Travis Diener, who went on to make big contributions in both the NCAA and NBA.

Crean had an overall record of 160-68 in his final seven seasons at Marquette (.702). The 2002-03 season was one of Marquette’s best ever. For the first time since winning the NCAA Championship in 1977, the squad reached the Final Four. “One of the finest four or five days of my life,” Crean said of the team’s run.

 Indiana University

Tom Crean guided the Indiana basketball program from April, 2008 until March, 2017.  He finished as the third winningest coach in Indiana history with 166 victories and will be remembered as one of the most important figures having taken over a program decimated by rules violations and poor character into a team ranked No. 1 in the preseason just five years later. Crean inherited a program facing NCAA sanctions and the return of one scholarship player. His vision for the program and passion never wavered and the results were achievements not seen in Bloomington for close to 20 years.

Despite his poor performance and player arrests, Crean was retained despite being on numerous media “hot seat” lists. After a sluggish start to the 2015–16 season, Crean and the Hoosiers went on to win the Big Ten Regular Season Championship, and Crean was awarded Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches and media. Despite being rated #3 in the AP Poll earlier in the season, the Hoosiers missed the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in nine years under Crean, finishing with an 18–16 record and falling in the first round of the NIT to Georgia Tech. Indiana fired Crean on March 16, 2017.
