Troy Kotsur wiki, Kotsur was born on July 24, 1968, in Mesa, Arizona, to Jodee and Len. When Kotsur’s parents found he was deaf when he was nine months old, they learnt American Sign Language so the family could communicate. Kotsur’s parents encouraged him to participate in sports and establish friends with other hearing youngsters in his neighbourhood. Kotsur first became interested in acting while attending the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf. He attended Westwood High School and graduated with honours. His theatre teacher urged him to appear in the senior variety show, and he did so with a pantomime skit that was well received and inspired him to continue theatre

Kotsur interned at KSTP-TV after graduating from high school (now KSAZ-TV). “My directing dream poofy after I accepted the fact that I lived in a world that did not speak my language,” he recalls of his internship, where he assisted an editor and did not feel connected with others. From 1987 to 1989, he studied theatre, television, and film at Gallaudet University.

Kotsur accepted an acting job offer from the National Theatre of the Deaf and left Gallaudet University to tour with NTD for two years, performing in two shows. He began playing in and directing many performances for the Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles, California, in 1994.  Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire, Lenny in Of Mice and Men, and Prince Hamlet in Ophelia were among his theatre roles. In a Deaf West Theatre production of the 1985 musical Big River in 2001, Kotsur and hearing actor Lyle Kanouse were cast together.

Huckleberry Finn’s father Pap was performed by Kotsur and Kanouse, with Kotsur singing and Kanouse speaking and singing. Following its triumph at the Mark Taper Forum, Big River was revived on Broadway by Roundabout Theater Company and Deaf West at the American Airlines Theater in New York City. He also worked as an ASL specialist for Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye and had a recurring role on the show. Since then, he has appeared in television and film.

In 2012, Kotsur performed in the play Cyrano, which was co-produced by Deaf West Theatre and The Fountain Theatre and was based on Cyrano de Bergerac. Stephen Sachs directed the play, which opened in April 2012.

Following Cyrano, Kotsur directed No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie, a feature film that premiered at the Heartland Film Festival in 2013.

Kotsur had a supporting part as a deaf father to a hearing teenage daughter in the feature film CODA in 2021. Sian Heder cast him as part of the ensemble after seeing his performances in Deaf West versions of Our Town and Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo. Kotsur’s performance in CODA “awed both spectators and critics,” according to NPR.
