A senior administration official told reporters that Zawahiri had been in hiding for years and that the operation to find and kill him was the result of “careful patient and persistent” work by the counter-terrorism and intelligence communities.
The US President said that justice has been delivered, adding, “No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the US will find you and take you out.”

On July 31, 2022, soon after 6:00 a.m. local time (9:00 p.m. Eastern Time), Al-Zawahiri was assassinated in an early-morning drone attack performed by the United States Central Intelligence Agency in Kabul’s posh Sherpur area. According to a senior American official, Zawahiri was struck by two missiles while standing on a balcony; the same analyst believes an AGM-114R9X Hellfire missile was used.

President Joe Biden announced at the White House on the evening of August 1, delayed by two days to allow time for proper verification of the operation’s success, that the US Intelligence Community had located Zawahiri as he moved into downtown Kabul in early 2022 and had authorized the operation a week prior. President Biden further asserted that there were no civilian casualties and that no members of Zawahiri’s family were harmed.

Zawahiri’s origins in Islamist militancy date back decades. The world first heard of him in a courtroom cage following the death of Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat in 1981.

Education
Zawahiri then attended Cairo University’s medical school, where he specialized in surgery and continued his covert operations. He graduated in 1974 and subsequently served as an army surgeon for three years. In 1980-81, he worked as a Red Crescent relief worker in Peshawar, Pakistan, where he served Afghan War refugees. During that period, he conducted multiple cross-border visits into Afghanistan and experienced firsthand the fighting.
