Sebold and her older sister, Mary, had to care for their mother, a journalist for a local paper who suffered from panic episodes and drank regularly, when they were young. In 1980, Sebold graduated from Malvern, Pennsylvania’s Great Valley High School. Sebold received her bachelor’s degree at Syracuse University after her father was unable to get her into the University of Pennsylvania. Tess Gallagher, one of her lecturers, became one of Sebold’s confidantes. Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff, and Hayden Carruth were among her lecturers.

She briefly attended graduate school at the University of Houston in Texas after graduating in 1984, then relocated to Manhattan for the next ten years. She worked as a waitress while seeking a writing career, but neither her poetry nor her novel-writing attempts were successful. In December 2021, she will be 58 years old.
