She was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 6, 1963. Her father taught Spanish at the University of Pennsylvania, and she grew up in the Paoli neighborhood of Philadelphia. Sebold and her older sister, Mary, had to care for their mother, a journalist for a local paper who suffered from panic episodes and drank regularly, when they were young. In 1980, Sebold graduated from Malvern, Pennsylvania’s Great Valley High School. Sebold received her bachelor’s degree at Syracuse University after her father was unable to get her into the University of Pennsylvania.
