Economics issues

The Echeverría administration oversaw an economic catastrophe in its last months after decades of economic progress under his predecessors, becoming the first of a string of governments that experienced serious economic problems over the subsequent two decades. The nation’s external debt increased dramatically under his administration, rising from US$6 billion in 1970 to US$20 billion in 1976. By 1976, 31 cents of every dollar Mexico earned from exports had to go toward paying interest and amortization on the country’s external debt.

Successive governments kept the peso’s value at 12.50 to the dollar from 1954 and 1976. Due to the worsening economic conditions, the Echeverría administration depreciated the peso by 59.2% on August 30, 1976, making it worth 19.90 to the dollar. The peso was devalued again two months later, this time at a rate of 26.60 to the dollar. For the first time in 1975 and 1976, the balance of services, which had previously recorded surpluses and had been utilized to partially fund the negative trade balance, was in deficit.

Despite this, the Mexican economy expanded by 6.1%, and significant public works and infrastructure projects were finished after years of stagnation. During his presidency, Echeverría nationalized the barbasco business. The primary hormone found in the contraceptive pill was derived naturally from wild barbacoa. The state-run PROQUIVEMEX corporation was established at a time when Mexico’s significance to the sector was decreasing, leading to nationalization.
