He held posts in the navy and education departments before advancing to chief administrative officer of the PRI, organising the presidential campaign of Adolfo López Mateos (1958-64), and was thereafter rewarded by the succeeding president, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, with the appointment as interior minister in 1964.

Luis Echeverría Alvarez: Former Mexican President dies at the age of 100?
On Saturday, the current president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that the previous president of Mexico, Luis Echeverría Alvarez, had died at the age of 100. Luis Echeverría Alvarez was accused of being responsible for crimes in Mexico fifty years ago.
On Twitter, López Obrador expressed his condolences to Echeverría friends and family “in the name of the government of Mexico,” but he did not discuss the extent of his personal grief at Echeverría loss. Echeverría served as president of Mexico from 1970 to 1976. López Obrador did not reveal the cause of death for the former president. In 2018, Echeverría was brought to the hospital because of difficulties related to her lungs.
