His interest in designing and architecture arose at a young age, and he enrolled in an architectural college. In 1976-77, he graduated from Columbia University in New York after finishing his architectural studies at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai. However, his career began much earlier, in 1968, as an apprentice with Ar. T. Khareghat, a firm with which he later became an associate partner in 1977.

Ar. Contractor was a visiting faculty member at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai from 1977 to 1980. He later designed that company’s first software-development park outside of Pune and its corporate educational facility near Mysore.
