Other projects by the contractor include the domestic terminal at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport and the DY Patil Stadium, which is home to both the Mumbai Indians cricket team and the Mumbai City FC football team. He also designed the Turbhe railway station in Navi Mumbai, and in 2018, he provided free access to 19 railway stations. Sorab designed Telangana’s Chief Minister’s official residence, Pragathi Bhavan, which was completed in November 2016. Contractor has received numerous awards for India’s best residential, commercial, educational, and hospitality projects. Hafeez was awarded India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, in 2016. 

What made Hafeez become an architect?

His interest in designing and architecture arose at a young age, and he enrolled in an architectural college. In 1976-77, he graduated from Columbia University in New York after finishing his architectural studies at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai. However, his career began much earlier, in 1968, as an apprentice with Ar. T. Khareghat, a firm with which he later became an associate partner in 1977.

Ar. Contractor was a visiting faculty member at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai from 1977 to 1980. He later designed that company’s first software-development park outside of Pune and its corporate educational facility near Mysore. His most well-known project is Hiranandani Gardens, a township in Powai, a Mumbai suburb.

Hafeez Contractor was born on June 19, 1950, in Mumbai to a Parsi family. He is now a 72-year-old handsome man. In 1975, he enrolled in the University of Mumbai’s Academy of Architecture after attending Boys’ Town Public School Nasik. He later received a scholarship to Columbia University, where he earned his master’s degree.

Sorab has a happy marriage with Pearl Contractor. He appears to be secretive about his personal life, as he rarely speaks publicly about his wife. The couple has two children together ( son Yaazd, daughter Zoish). The couple lives in a 3,500-square-foot home in Dadar with their children, two cats, and staff.
